The Agile community is quite familiar with the idea of using a kanban board as an instrument to visualize the work in progress. However, more and more Agile folks are now trying to understand how this idea can be extended to an entire new approach to manage their projects.
Kanban Development is a new way to manage software projects. It allows the achievement of more flexibility and governance for projects in different levels of maturity or agility. It uses techniques to limit work in different stages of the process and a pull system to make units of work flow from demand to delivering in a visible way.
The expected results of this model is to balance demand against throughput creating process stability and cycle time predictability. Kanban Development also reveals bottlenecks in the process and promotes slack time in the non-bottlenecks stages. This slack time and the sustainable pace achieved improve collaboration and team work, which is an essential element for any Agile team.
